Greene Acres Community Garden Meeting Minutes ATTENDEES October 13, 2003 Karen, Susan, Amanda, Noah, Zach, Brian (NYRP) AGENDA 1. 1. Introductions. 2. Contractor update. 3. Bulb giveaway. 4. Mulching. 5. Old business/new business. MINUTES 1. Introductions. Brian Sahd, Director of the NYRP's New York Garden Trust, joined the meeting to give an update on the contractor that the Garden Trust has hired to work on some projects in Greene Acres Community Garden. 2. Contractor update. The contractor can come to Greene Acres in the early morning before the end of October to meet with gardeners and go through the work to be done. The contractor will: * Smooth the ground around and between the beds and in the back corner. * Install new paths around the beds and between the beds. The path around the beds will most likely be crushed gravel. Between the beds, the path could be sawdust, wood chips or another low maintenance material. * Fill in the berm. The berm could either stay the same dimensions, or it could be made wider and expanded to the Franklin Avenue fence. A brick wall could also be built on the garden side of the berm. * Build brick patio near entrances. * Dig posthole for sign, bulletin board and compost scale. Install signpost. * Install fine mesh around the bottom of the fences to keep trash from blowing into the garden. * Create a dry streambed from the location of the rainwater collection tank to the pond area (currently being used for tomatoes). Build small bridges over streambed. * Possibly remove the large boulder between the private beds near Greene Avenue. The work can be done in the late October or early November. Greene Acres will have a workday to prepare the garden, move bricks, mark paths, etc. One scenario is that the contractor could come on a Friday, Greene Acres could have a workday over the weekend, and the contractor could come back on Monday to finish the work. Another scenario is that Greene Acres gardeners have a workday the weekend before the contractor comes. In addition, the Garden Trust will remove the back chain link fence and replace the dilapidated chain link fence along the Keane's property. The Garden Trust will also install parts for the rainwater collection tank. 3. Bulb giveaway. A number of bulb giveaways are coming up. Gardeners are encouraged to go to them and get bulbs to plant in the garden. 4. Mulching. The beds along Franklin Avenue should be leaf mulched. A local gardener, Charlie Blyer, can supply Greene Acres with free leaves. We need to find out the source of the leaves to ascertain whether or not they can be considered organic. 5. Old business/new business.
